13 March 2025

On 13 March 2025, the Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate paid a visit to the BMT Europe B.V. location in The Netherlands. The motivation for this was their earlier request to BMT to test advanced measuring methods that are under development by them. The purpose of the tests was to carry out aerial measurements using a drone and to assess whether conducting environmental measurements using a drone offers added value in obtaining objective and accurate information about harmful substances in the immediate vicinity of locations where such substances are used. The drone was equipped to measure mercury, hydrocarbons and other volatile components.

BMT gave ILT every opportunity to carry out measurements using the drone. ‘Carrying out these kinds of tests with the aim of being able to offer even more safety in the future to both personnel and our direct surroundings benefits us all’, says Kasper Brakenhoff, CEO of BMT International, “and for this reason we are happy to cooperate with the Inspectorate to further expand and improve their measuring methods”.

The drone has carried out multiple flights above and around the factory in varying weather conditions. During the aerial measurements, the labour inspectorate was present that day as well, to gain more experience with various aspects that play an important role in the processing of mercury.
