BMT Asia Co. Ltd staff is hands on when it comes to caring for the environment. An enthusiastic group of green thumbs, led by Ms. Sunisa Sonsa-ne, CSR Manager, recently participated in an important project aimed at saving the Bangpoo mangrove forest. The project rehabilitates the mangroves and the community of aquatic animals who depend on them.
Each year, IEAT Bangpoo organizes a restoration activity for the mangrove forest and BMT is always enthusiastic to help. Our factory is just 10km from the lush forest and want to make sure IEAT Banpoo’s project succeeds in making a difference on the ground and in raising awareness to care for our planet. After all, sustainability is at the core of why BMT exists.
Thailand’s coastal provinces are home to many forests like Bangpoo, however over the last 30 years their numbers have rapidly decreased. Without immediate action, these coastlines face the threat of being underwater in the next 20 years. So planting mangroves to protect land erosion is critical to protect these areas for future generations.
BMT staff helped plant mangrove saplings to rehabilitate the forest, an essential breeding ground and habitat for aquatic animals. While they planted, they learnt more about mangroves and the critical measures we all need to be taking to care for nature. For example:
- Mangroves provide shoreline protection and sediment accretion. They buffer the shoreline from the destructive impact of storms and waves.
- Mangroves trap and bind sediments. They reduce coastal turbidity, and clean the water.
- Mangroves provide homes for both plants and animals.
- Mangroves are nurseries for commercially important fish stocks, replenishing estuarine and coastal fisheries.
The initiative was a great success – around 300 mangroves were planted and more were left with the Bangpoo Recreation Center for planting. This is one of the many global CSR activities BMT undertakes to put nature first. To learn more about BMT’s sustainability program, click here.
