BMT officially opened the BMT Australia mercury treatment facility in Kwinana Beach, Western Australia in December 2019. The opening was hosted by the Mr Robert Jan Dubbeldam, CEO of BMT.
Mr Dubbeldam said that the facility will treat mercury contaminated waste and NORM.
“As proven specialists in waste treatment, BMT has answered the call of Australian industry, particularly the liquified natural gas industry, to provide a safe, domestic mercury treatment solution that meets the Minamata Convention,” said Mr Dubbeldam.“Our technology is based on a proven and reliable vacuum distillation process that produces a cleaned, dry product. BMT is considered a world leader in this specialist and niche field.”
The facility eliminates the risk and liability of transboundary movement of hazardous waste and addresses the needs of industry ensuring Australia meets its Basel and Minamata Convention obligations.
“Mercury extracted during treatment will, in accordance with the Minamata Convention, be stabilised, not recycled. Once stabilised, the product is sent for disposal in an engineered, geological repository for permanent storage under safe and controlled circumstances to ensure the protection of the environment from any adverse effects,” said Mr Dubbeldam.“Until now there hasn’t been any specialist treatment facilities and mercury waste management services in Australia.
“It is an exciting time for the company as we continue to expand our global footprint and share our experience and knowledge about mercury and actively support parties in their mercury waste management practices.”
Mr Dubbeldam paid tribute to the shareholders and thanked them for their support and making time to travel from the Netherlands to attend the official opening.
